Evaluation
Our main task was to create 3 aspects of a new music magazine. The Front cover, the contents page and a double page spread.
The first thing we did was a primary task of a new College magazine. I believe that this helped a lot as it gave me a small taster of what to expect when I created my music magazine. Overall I don’t think the college magazine went very well for a few reasons. One reason was my lack of experience with Photoshop, which was used to actually create the magazine. Another reason I don’t believe it went very well was due to the time we had to do it, so a lot of it was rushed. Despite that the rest of the things we had to do for the preliminary task went good, but not overly great.
For the main magazine the first thing we had to do was research. What I did was choose three already designed magazine covers, contents page and double page spreads then I picked out the codes and conventions shown in them. This really helped me in several ways as it was a good way to revise my knowledge of the codes and conventions of a magazine. It also helped give me several ideas for my magazine as a whole, such as the background which I realised should be dark and gritty, influenced from other magazines such as Kerrang! Magazine and Metalhammer Magazine. Both of these magazines influenced many choices I made in my planning and production.
The next thing I did was begin planning. Overall I believe I could have done a better job on my planning, as I made several plans of my front cover, but not as many for my contents page and double page spread, I also believe that I rushed my plans, so they weren’t as accurate as I would have liked them to be. Despite that, the plans that I did helped me a lot choose how I was going to layout my magazine, such as where to place the masthead and how big to make the headlines on my magazine.
After this I began to take pictures for my magazine. Overall I took over 25 pictures and picked 5 of them. I took 25 pictures as I believed that if I took lots of pictures I would be able to choose the best pictures out of the ones I took that suites the look of my magazine. I believe the pictures that I choose where the best pictures for my magazine as a lot of them feature the model giving off aggressive and rebellious connotations, which is one of the aspects of the type of music I choose. One of the models in my picture did an offensive hang gesture which helps show the rebellious nature of my magazine. In another one he wasn’t looking directly at the camera with his hood up, further showing the rebellious look of the magazine. Furthermore, in several of my pictures the model was holding a musical instrument, such as a bass guitar or drum sticks. This helps signify that the magazine’s key subject is music.
After this the actual construction of my music magazine began. I first began by cutting out all my pictures on Photoshop, which went rather slowly due to the fact at the beginning of my creating my magazine I was still very inexperienced in the use Photoshop. After I cut out my pictures I began on my front cover. I believe that my front cover went very well as this was when I began to get the hang of using Photoshop. I believe that the Magazine title “Hard Sound” was a good choice as the use of the word “hard” helped my express that the magazine was about harder music such as metal and rock. Also, I the main colour used in my front page was black, which further helps signify that the music is metal due to its dark feel.
I now began to do my contents page. I don’t believe that this went as well as my contents page due to the fact that I had originally lost my contents page that I did, so I had to rush it due to time management. Again I stuck with the main colour of black to signify the dark feel of my magazine. I also believe that the placement of the pictures on my contents page was well chosen as it wasn’t placed right in middle of the page but were still some of the main aspects.
I now went on to the double page spread, once again sticking with the black colour code. I made the headline red as the name of the band is “Devilrider” and stereotypically the colour that represents the devil is red. I believe that my double page spread went well due to my growing experience with Photoshop, but I do believe that I could have done more to make the page more eye catching as the plain black background looked boring.
The target audience of my magazine was people aged 16-25 who are interested in the genre of music metal. I made the magazine appeal to the target audience by making the models wear costumes that relate with the genre of music. I also used some taboo language in my magazine, to signify that the magazine’s target audience isn’t children and for more mature people.
Overall, the experience of making a music magazine was fun and a good way to learn about things such as using Photoshop, the conventions of magazine and how to take good photos. If I was to do this again, I would take even more photos so I have a better selection of pictures. I would also make it so that my models wore better costumes. I would also manage my time better as I believe that I didn’t leave my self enough time to do a good job on my double page spread. I would also do more research on how to use Photoshop so I would have had more experience from the start of the project instead of learning as I went along.

Edited Contents Page
Edited Front Page
This is an edited version of my finished front cover. The edits I made were to try and make the masshead and headline stand out more. I did this by giving them both an outer glow. I belive that it does make them stand out more, but the glow creates a contrast to the rest of the magazine, so i decided not to use it.Finished Front Cover
This is my finish product of my front cover. I believe that my front cover portrays most of the conventions of a music magazine. The genre of the magazine was metal/hard rock so the aim was to make it look dark. The use of the colour black portrays the dark side of the music. To possibly improve my magazine front cover the model could have had a better costume to relate to the magazine. Furthermore, to make it look more professional I could have added a bar code, but due to time management i did not have time.
